One more gift giving event and I’m done ‘till October

As I finally finished cleaning up the mess Christmas morning I sat down and sighed a happy sigh. See, a month ago I was stressing over what to get Kev, the guy who buys the things when he wants them leaving nothing for me to gift him with, for Christmas. Every year I end up feeling like crap when he manages to surprise me with incredible gifts while he sits there with yet another crappy gift from me. Happy Feet slippers anyone?

Kev is fully aware of how awful he is to shop for and assures me that he loves all his gifts but I still feel awful and desperately needed to avoid that this year.  I started stressing big time. Soon after my first post on this subject last month my stressing turned into whining which turned into tears which finally led to Kev giving up the latest toy he wanted but, and I quote, “its too expensive so I’ll buy it myself.” Umm, no *gasp for air* you won’t.

The boy wanted a laptop and damn it I was buying him a laptop (expensive, yes but he has been robbed the last 2 years so I didn’t see anything wrong with it).

Seeing as Kev already knew what he wanted as far as specs, I didn’t get to surprise him on Christmas morning but whatever. He had a cool gift from me actually under the tree this year which meant that I didn’t feel like a cheap thoughtless wife so ha! A happy sigh for success! Theres always next time for surprises…

And this is where the happy sigh turns into another sigh of panic. That next time is two and a half weeks away, our 3rd Anniversary. There isn’t a lot of time to think and considering we both spent far too much on Christmas for each other there isn’t a lot of money to be spent either. Le sigh. Why did I decide on a January wedding?!

We need a kid to spoil. Did I just say that?

Ummm. No

Me + Snow + Snowboard or Skis = Just No.

I’m back in one piece, bruised and sore but in one piece. I should have stayed in the lounge.

Wish me luck

I hate to go skimpy 2 days in a row so early into this project but...I’m going to go skimpy. I need to save my energy as I’m going snowboarding tomorrow for the first time in my life.

Well, wait. I’ve been snowboarding before. Sort of.

By saying I’ve been snowboarding before I mean that at the beginning of the day when my friends headed for the big mountain I went towards the baby mountain...via the lounge where I sat the entire day.  It was such a shame (and honestly a waste of money).

Anyways, I’m going snowboarding tomorrow.  I hope I come home in one piece.

Care for a cupcake, Cupcake?

cupcakecut

Because I apparently didn’t have enough cookies and cakes over the last two weeks, I decided that yesterday was a good day to make cupcakes from scratch. Snow day boredom got to me I guess.

I used a recipe from the Cupcake! book that Moah gave me for Christmas. Cupcakes!, by the way, is the cutest recipe book ever. Its pink!  Anywho, seeing as I only had the basic cupcake ingredients on hand I decided to go with the standard vanilla cupcake with cream cheese frosting. Plus, lets be honest, if I wanted any shot at being successful at this cupcake thing I knew I had to keep things simple.

egg

Want to know the one thing I hate the most when baking (and cooking)? No? Too bad, I’m going to tell you anyways smile - Touching eggs, especially separating whites and yolks, even with gloves on. It makes me cringe. So imagine how excited I was when I realized that the recipe called for 1 egg and 1 egg yolk.  Yay, egg yolk separating!  Ick.

Aside from the egg thing, which I had to have Kev handle, I managed to successfully follow this straight forward and easy recipe without problems.  I even managed to perfectly bake them. I know, you were expecting me to tell you I burned them. I didn’t but just wait ‘till next week when I tell you about my cinnamon roll experience.

Expect more cupcakes soon. This book is full of incredible recipes and I apparently now have some confidence that I can actually do something right in the kitchen!

mess

Anyone want to help cleanup?

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

I was going to do one of the many 2007 recap posts I’ve seen around the last few days but decided against it. Especially when I can sum up 2007 pretty quickly. Roller coaster. Ok, I could get a little deeper. 2007 wasn’t horrible, I mean I’m still alive and married, but it was also far from great. I did things I said I would never do and said many things that I should have never thought, never mind said out loud. Le sigh. 2008 will be better.

I’ve never been much of a resolution type person but this year there are a few things I need and want to do to make sure 2008 is different. Hopefully better but I’ll be ok with different.

1. I HAVE to cut back on the caffeine.
2. Slow down (if #1 is successful this should actually be easy rasberry)
3. Stop swearing so D@mn much smile
4. Blog every day.

I’m laughing at #4 but I did join blog 365. As someone who failed on day 4 in November I have no business even thinking that I could be successful at this. I’m going to try anyways. I actually spent some time the other day (lay overs are great sometimes) planning posts for the next 2 months so I should be good until March, time considering of course. If I can’t find the time to write a full post I’ll be compensating with photos (which will put my lovely new Canon 40D to good use.)

This is going to be interesting…

Dear Mother Nature

Let it snow. Go ahead, I won’t complain. Seriously, I won’t! Why? Because I was supposed to have jury duty today and thanks to you and your threat of a lot of snow, Jury Duty was canceled! So, let it snow snow snow snow snow and snow!

Cramping My Style

It all started a few years ago when my mother registered her first email address. It took a while for her to really get into it but eventually she turned into a parental spammer sending me at least 5 emails a day.  A year after that my lovely mother figured out how to send text messages. Trying to figure out her version of short hand gave me many headaches but I dealt because seriously, that woman can be funny. After text messaging came her first online purchase. I’ll admit, I was proud. My father cringed in worry over that one though. I think he still does.

Fast forward to a month ago. Mother wants a blog. That was a big one. Mother was starting to hit closer and closer to ummm I dunno, my comfort level.  “A blog” I asked. “Really?” I have yet to set one up for her even though I get daily emails and yes, text messages reminding me to get this done.

With every advancement in technology my mother made came a little stress on my part but I like to think that I’ve dealt with all of this in stride (except the blog thing which I’m hoping will eventually just go away.) Until today that is:

Me: “Hi, what are you up to this morning?”
Mother: “I’m just playing around in Facebook.”
Mother: “What was that?”
Me: “Sorry, I just spit my coffee all over the place. Facebook?”
Mother: “Yes, didn’t you get my friend invite”
Me: *Chokes*

My mother is starting to cramp my style. Seriously, did she not get enough of that when I was in high school? Le Sigh. Just when I was starting to have fun with the Super Poke application.

Pout.

postcardrow

Friday Night
Kev: “What do you want to do this weekend?”
Me: “Go to San Francisco”
Kev: “No”

Saturday Morning
Kev: “What do you want to do first?”
Me: “San Francisco”
Kev: *Evil annoyed glare*

Saturday Afternoon
Kev: “What do you want for Christmas?”
Me: “Plane ticket to San Francisco”
Kev: *Another evil annoyed glare*

Rinse. Repeat. I’m not sure exactly what brought this one but I want to go back...now.

Outrageous

I have a post all ready to go about a somewhat serious topic but I have decided to wait a little while before posting. Maybe next week.

Instead, I’m going to share the best brownie recipe EVER. Seriously, I mean Ever. It might have something to do with the 6 eggs and 1lb of butter!

Bah.Hum.Bug.

Despite the fact that I have yet to step foot in a mall/store for the sole purpose of Christmas shopping I’m finding myself in Christmas shopping hell right now. Its all Kev’s fault. I have no idea what to get him for Christmas. None. Zip. Zilch.

That man, that lovely man, is the hardest person to shop for (zip it Steve). For 10 years I have struggled to come up with something cool/fun to surprise him with for Christmas and for 10 years I have failed. Birthdays and anniversary’s are just as impossible. Well, except for this year’s birthday which only turned out different because he joined the gym with me (or should I say for me) and I managed to surprise him with a new iPod. He loved it and was seriously surprised by it. So surprised that he wondered why he didn’t think of it before. Oh, look! The problem!  When Kev wants something he gets it. He doesn’t think to wait for an upcoming gift bearing event. He wants it, he gets it end of story.

Now, don’t get me wrong. We have a budget and are both have an “allowance” which he is following so I really don’t have a problem with what he buys. I just wish he would realize that I’m banging my head against the wall trying to figure this out and that I’m honestly upset that once again I can’t come up with anything for him on my own.  Le. Sigh.

Maybe I just need to start making things harder on him, give him a taste of his own medicine...a free shopping pass for me in a way…

The Monday post

Well, thats weird, I could have sworn that I posted more last week. Apparently that was in my head.

This weekend I managed to make myself feel...like Grandma when she got run over by a reindeer. I went out not once but twice Friday night. I started out at Meredith’s going away party (see, tell a girl about your blog and she goes ahead and gets a new job smile ) where I had 1 drink that took me 2 hours to recover from before leaving at 7:30. I = Lightweight. I then headed to the gym because not only am I a lightweight, I’m smart. Plus, like I said. I was over it.

Round two took place downtown and well, between being tired from round one and the gym not to mention work, all it took was 2 drinks before the husband cut me off. Seriously, its sad how much of a light weight I am. I don’t do this as often as I used to so I know this has a lot to do with it but still, kind of pathetic. Even more pathetic was my sorry but that was parked on the couch the entire day Saturday due to a slight “headache.” Just call me Grandma.

Le Monday…Ughh

Monday? Really? 5 days gone, just like that. Ughh. At least I had fun while I had the chance. Something tells me I won’t be seeing that (fun) anytime soon. Le. Venti. Sigh. Ha, I haven’t said that one in a while.

Anyways, my 5 day break was incredible thanks to a few friends who decided to come out to the right coast for the Holiday.  5 days filled with a lot of driving, a lot of crowds, very little sleep, a lot of shopping and a lot of ice skating. Yes, Ice skating and no, I didn’t break anything. I didn’t even fall! Big accomplishment here. I anticipate a lot of nights at the frog pond this year and not just to take pictures.

When did this happen

I never found myself to be a complete football fan but apparently, based on my actions during tonight’s Pats game, I’ve become obsessed.

So far, I have:

* Yelled at the tv three times. The husband informed me after the first incident that no one can hear me except the neighbors and they can’t do anything about the fact that Brady was just sacked.
* Paced the living room for about 10 minutes straight
* Said 3 Hail Mary’s

Updated to add that I happened to catch the clock as it turned to 11:11. For some reason I thought this was lucky (ahem) and decided to stare at the clock for a full minute repeating “they will win.”
This seriously can’t be healthy.
